One Down Dog

Two thumbs up for better web navigation

One Down Dog is a community-driven fitness and yoga center that’s all about feeling good. So when their digital user journey started to feel not-so-good, they called up Kicks to find a better pose for their new website.

Web navigation finds its flow

For a practice that’s all about easy movement, One Down Dog was particularly frustrated with how hard it was for yoga students to navigate their website.

As Kicks rebuilt onedowndog.com, improving the user journey went hand in hand with reflecting ODD’s updated brand. We restructured pages to ease the flow of content, making it much easier for students to find the information they’re looking for — whether it’s finding a studio near them or the sign-up button for an upcoming class.

Flow with Kicks Web Design

Find your center through online scheduling

A lot of One Down Dog’s previous website was based on Mindbody, a mobile app that lets fitness studios handle scheduling, among other great functionality. In some places of ODD’s site, Mindbody integration was working great — in others, not so much.

While online scheduling is a must for a modern yoga studio, the existing implementation was pretty clunky to navigate. While we ported over the class scheduling tool, we did a bit of extra work under the hood to make it purr.

Thanks to new embeds, the calendar tool is much more neatly organized and easy to navigate. We optimized the calendar view for days and weeks rather than entire months, so it’s simpler for users to view key information on upcoming classes.

Content & more content

Making a $5,000+ purchase online isn’t always the easiest sell. Liberty & 33rd’s high-quality photography gives shoppers a great view of pieces they have their eye on, but the more information they can get the better — especially for those with tight budgets who might otherwise turn to cheaper options like Crate & Barrel.

Content marketing was a natural fit to ease those big-ticket purchases. Kicks penned blogs that highlight the careers and creative processes of prolific furniture designers, and tied them to their respective pieces in Liberty & 33rd’s catalog. Now would-be customers can do their research right on liberty33rd.com and feel more informed about hitting the “add to cart” button.

Plugin, breathe out

There’s a lot to do at a modern yoga studio aside from slapping down your yoga mat for a vinyasa session. In addition to traditional classes there are any number of events, workshops and ongoing training sessions happening in the studio, and they’re not always easy to keep track of.

Once again, Mindbody was serving One Down Dog in some areas, but wrangling all those disparate events isn’t the app’s strong suit. Instead, Kicks implemented an Events Calendar to add some additional punch to the new ODD site.

The Events Calendar Pro plugin allowed us to build a category template selector that serves two great purposes. On one hand, it’s an all-in-one tool for ODD staff to manage all those events outside of yoga sessions. On the other, it gives some additional context and design for events that otherwise might get lost in the shuffle of the larger yoga class calendar.

Reach for better teacher bios

A yoga studio is only as good as its people, and ODD has a tight-knit crew of instructors that make the studio feel like home. Mindbody allowed those instructors to upload some scant information about themselves, but it wasn’t the most intuitive tool for ODD management.

Kicks started by migrating all existing data from Mindbody into a teacher section on the back end of Wordpress. That lets ODD management quickly add, edit and remove teachers when needed, instead of having to stumble through Mindbody’s interface.

Another bonus to that new backend page is that each instructor can now market their own profile right on the new ODD site. Rather than make their clients download Mindbody, instructors can shoot out a URL with their bio, information on their class style, and a link to their schedule all in one place.
